The Silent Writing Life For Allan Guthrie

Wed, 04/09/2008 - 16:45

Name: Allan Guthrie

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?
I write in my study. I find it pretty hard to write when travelling. I always have the best intentions, but in reality it’s only if I’m away in one place for a few days that I tend to get any meaningful writing done.

Can you work with music or the tv on?

My concentration’s so poor I need complete silence, unfortunately. I wish it were otherwise.

Pub Writer, John Rickards

Name: John Rickards

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?
Usually at my local pub. Sit at the bar with my laptop, surrounded by builders, guzzling Red Bull. I can and have written perfectly well while traveling – on trains, in hotels, whatever. I’m not precious about my environment; so long as my missus and my little boy aren’t around (very distracting), I’m happy.

Can you work with music or the tv on?

Can, have and do, when I’m working at home.

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?
I write in an office one mile from my house. I can and do write while traveling. I try to do something on my latest novel--make progress--every day of my life.

Can you work with music or the tv on?

No TV, but I often have the radio on. Depends on my mood. I like smooth jazz or classical music to write by, however, no vocals.

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?

I have an office in a building separate from the house where I do most of my work. Sometimes, though, I work with a laptop in my recliner, just depends on how I feel and what else is going on. I’ve written many outlines while traveling, and if I’m staying in one place for a while, rather than driving a lot every day, I can turn out pages on the current project without much trouble.

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?

I have a room that I call an office. And I'm too busy watching movies on planes or reading books on trains to bother with writing. Pfft. Stupid writing.

Can you work with music or the tv on?

Always music, never television. Talking voices are difficult to tune out. And the music has to be live. I have a hobo I pay to sing and dance. He's quite good. He sounds like James Taylor. If James Taylor looked at your cat like it was dinner. I call him Alf.

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?

Typically in my home office, at the computer, or longhand, anywhere, with a legal pad and a ballpoint. I always write on the road and more often than not start a novel somewhere other than at home.

Where do you write? Can you write when traveling?

In my home office, at my desk. I burn out on the process very quickly. Writing is a painful, frustrating process for me, so I write in short spurts throughout the day, keeping the mindset by reading plenty, watching genre films (whatever genre I might be working in), reaching out to like-minded writers and fans on message boards, etc. I just don't know how some authors manage to plant their asses in the chair and write for hours on end.

Where do you write? Home. Usually in bed, but also standing at a counter, or sitting on the floor.

Can you write when traveling? No. I can’t write when I’m tired or distracted. I can sometimes come up with plot ideas when I’m traveling, but I’ve never been able to actually write while traveling.
